Abstract

The stage of sewing is considered one of the most important stages on which the quality of the final product relies and its conformity with the required specifications. In addition, it is considered one of the stages that require a physical effort and requires sitting for long periods which in turn may affect the worker's performance and productivity, and may also affect the quality of the final product.
The research aims at the following:
1-      Determining the impact of the work environment (physical factors – the design of workplace – the sewing process) on the performance of the sewing workers at ready-made garment factories.
2-      Determining the physical requirements for workers responsible for sewing at the ready-made garment factories.
3-      Measuring the performance of the sewing worker in the production of abaya at the garment factories under study.
4-      Proposing the design of a suitable work environment for the performance of the sewing worker at the ready-made garment factories.
5-      The research adopted the descriptive approach using the case study. The questionnaire and the work analysis form were used to achieve the objectives of the research. The researcher applied the previous tools on (20) sewing workers at (4) factories in Mahalla El Kubra City, Arab Republic of Egypt.

The research concluded the following results:
1-      The work environment at the factories under study is not suitable for the nature of the work of the garment makers in terms of (the physical factors - the design of the workplace - the process of sewing), causing problems affecting the performance of the sewing workers.
2-      Personal requirements necessary for the sewing workers (literacy, experience or training of at least 3 weeks - no need for multi-skilled worker).
3-      The physical requirements necessary for the sewing process workers (hand strength, hand skill, hand picking, hand grip, assembly, arm force, visual motor synergy, spine straightening, and finger moving speed).
4-      There is a negative impact on the performance of the sewing worker, as the rate of production of the worker at the factories under study is below the normal rate of production due to the inappropriate work environment.
5-      A design suitable for work environment rules was proposed to perform the sewing process at the garment factories related to (the physical factors, the design of the workplace, the sewing process)
The study recommended the following:
The necessity of observing the appropriate work environment on designing the production halls at the ready-made garment factories, the establishment of ergonomic bases for all the stages of producing ready-made garments, and the design of training programs for the garment industry workers that urge them to follow appropriate work environment rules during work at all stages of garment production.
