Psychological Security and its Relationship to Irrational Thoughts and Mental Health among Preparatory Stage Students with Hearing Impairments

Abstract

The study aims to reveal the relationship between psychological security, irrational thoughts, and mental health among hearing-impaired middle school students. The descriptive correlational approach was used. The study sample comprises 80 deaf and hard-of-hearing middle school students from Al-Amal School for the Deaf and Hearing-Impaired، Shebin El-Kom، Menoufia Governorate. The psychological security scale, the irrational thoughts scale, and the mental health scale for students in the academic year 2021-2022 were used. Results showed that psychological security was low while irrational thoughts were high. The level of mental health was low. There was a significant inverse correlation between the scores of deaf middle school students on the psychological security scale, and their scores on the irrational thoughts scale. There was also a positive statistically significant correlation between the student's scores on the psychological security scale and their scores on the mental health scale. There was also an inverse statistically significant correlation between the student's scores on the mental health scale and their scores on the irrational thoughts scale. There were also statistically significant differences between the two groups of males and females in psychological security in favor of females. There were statistically significant differences between the two groups of males and females in irrational thoughts favoring males. The differences in mental health were not statistically significant between the two groups of males and females. Students' scores on the scale of irrational thoughts and their dimensions and the scale of mental health and its dimensions help predict psychological security and its dimensions.
