Attitudes and motives that affect the housewife's behavior related to waste of food in the Egyptian and Kuwaiti household

Abstract

The manuscript aimed to study the attitudes and motives that affect the housewife's behavior related to waste of food in the Egyptian and Kuwaiti households. An intentional sample consisted of (460) housewife; (230) from each of Saad Al-Abdullah district in Kuwait and Al-Montazah district in Alexandria were participated, they were from different socio-economic and age groups. The study tool was a questionnaire. The descriptive and analytical approach was used in the study. Results showed a positive attitude towards reducing food waste for both of Egyptian and Kuwaiti housewives. Proudness and pride was the main motive for the preparation of large quantities of food. A statistical significant correlation was found between the both Egyptian and Kuwaiti housewife's attitudes towards reducing the waste of food and each of ( age of the housewife, the educational level, family income, and the number of family members). A statistical significant correlation was found between the motives of the Egyptian and Kuwaiti housewife in preparing a large quantity of food and each of (family income - the number of family members). Statistical differences were found (at 0.01) in the housewives attitudes towards reducing the waste of food between the Kuwaiti and Egyptian consumers for the benefit of the Egyptian housewife
The study recommends the need to raise awareness level of rational behavior of consumption to avoid waste of food and integrate it within courses on the level of primary and preparatory study, also establishment of educational seminars to serve in this purpose and highlight on this issue .
